The Institution Assessment Framework (formerly known as Educational Profiles) submission is an annual reporting requirement of the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (formerly DEST).  The submission, which is written to specifications supplied by DEEWR annually, forms the basis of the contract between the Commonwealth Government and UNSW for the provision of funds in exchange for delivery of an agreed set of teaching, research, capital development, equity and quality improvement initiatives and services.  Because of its focus on Government funding, it is less broad in scope than other Planning documentation developed by the University.

Since 1995, the University has reviewed its performance annually against an agreed set of measures, by means of a report known generally as the Performance Indicators Report.  The report covered key areas of the University's performance such as student selection, student progress, student satisfaction, research outcomes, resources, staff profile, staff satisfaction, and student equity.  Reports for the years 1999 to 2004 are available for download as shown below.

From 2002, in the context of a new strategic planning process being led by the Vice-Chancellor, and in response to changing needs for data from Faculties, it was decided that it would be useful to have a set of compact and Faculty-specific reports to complement the University-wide report.

These reports, to be known as the Faculty Indicators Reports, will each cover a rolling three-year period.  The measures included in these Faculty-based reports have been selected from the broader set of measures that were previously included in the Performance Indicators Reports.  The Faculty measures have been arranged in groups relating to student demand, student progress, student satisfaction, research participation, staff profile, and student equity.  It is hoped that they will be of use to Faculties in monitoring their performance over time across a standard set of indicators.

The first and second of these reports, covering the period 2000 to 2004, are available for download as shown below.

Some measures that were previously included in the Performance Indicators Report have not been included in the Faculty Indicators Reports as they apply to the University as a whole rather than to individual Faculties.  The collection of the University-wide measures has been continued, and the data has been placed on the web.

To access the data on these University-wide measures, go to the Statistics pages and select Performance Indicators from the menu options. (Restricted to UNSW)

At a meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee on 2 November 2005, it was agreed that the University should commence implementation of elements of the new UNSW Planning and Review Process (PRP).  One of the recommendations supported by the VCAC was: 'That the IARO co-ordinates development of a standard data set to support Faculty/Divisional Performance Self-Review'.

The IARO published the UNSW Planning and Review Process - Standard Data Set report in January 2006.  This report contains indicators on a range of factors at UNSW such as Student Recruitment & Enrolment, Teaching & Learning and Staff.

The complete document is available by clicking on the link below.  IARO has also created the same document for the individual faculties and areas at UNSW.

The UNSW Student Survey provides valuable information to inform the University's planning and quality improvement processes.  The University surveys currently enrolled students on a regular basis to obtain feedback on students' overall satisfaction with UNSW, with the quality of the educational experience at UNSW, and with the quality of facilities and services that support teaching and learning.

In particular years, the survey addresses a number of additional issues of strategic importance.  Additional issues that have been addressed to date include students' access to information technology, the circumstances of students that might impact on timetabling and transport, students' acquisition of generic skills and attributes, and their assessment of the core values espoused by UNSW.  Student survey results are included in the annual reports on University and Faculty Performance Indicators.

In 2004, the survey took a new approach by focussing on the experience of first year students in their engagement with the University experience.  This line of investigation has proven especially useful in the extensive work being done at UNSW to improve the learning and teaching exerience.

In 2005, the survey was designed with the assistance of the Learning and Teaching Unit to incorporate the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and questions relating to overall satisfaction with the University experience.

In 2006, the Questionnaire was reviewed by the Learning and Teaching Unit, who have written the report below.

The Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) is an annual survey of graduates that provides a range of qualitative measures of students' educational experience at the University.  Student satisfaction ratings derived from the CEQ form part of the set of indicators that have been identified by Council for use in regular and systematic evaluation of the University's performance.  CEQ results have also been used in PREP discussions, and are a mandatory component of the University's annual Institution Assessment Framework discussions with DEEWR.

The survey has been carried out at all Australian universities since 1993, contributing to a national data collection as well as providing information of great value to UNSW itself in benchmarking and identification of good practice.  It is thought to be the only example in the world of such a comprehensive survey of graduate satisfaction.

The Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) is an annual survey of the "first destinations" of UNSW graduates that is carried out at the point of graduation.  The report provides a detailed analysis of the employment and further study outcomes of UNSW graduates, including salaries.  The report also draws on comparative data from the national statistical collections of the Australian Bureau of Statistics.  As the survey is also carried out at all other Australian universities, the report also provides comparative data for other universities drawn from the national report on the GDS that is published by the Graduate Careers Council of Australia (GCCA).

The GDS provides a valuable resource in relation to many important University functions, including evaluation of graduate outcomes, marketing and student recruitment, corporate relations, links with employers of graduates, and the provision of student services such as careers advice and information.  GDS results are a mandatory component of the University's Educational Profiles submission to DEEWR.

The Staff Opinion Survey (SOS) is a periodic workplace climate survey of UNSW staff, first carried out in 1998.  The 1998 SOS, which was carried out at a time of significant change for the University community, addressed issues that had been identified in focus groups as of critical importance to staff.  These included workload, attitudes to change, access to equipment and resources, flexible working arrangements, discrimination and harassment, staff and organisational priorities, management and leadership at UNSW, team work and collaboration, communication, staff ratings of UNSW as an employer and the commitment of staff to UNSW.

Results of the SOS have been circulated widely to the University community, including the staff unions, and have been the subject of discussions between the Vice-Chancellor, Faculties and Divisional heads.

Staff of the Planning Office from time to time undertake externally funded projects, including those in the following list.

The Course Experience Questionnaire Symposium 1998, Terry Hand and Kerry Trembath, Evaluations and Investigations Programme, Department of Education, Science and Training, July 1999

This publication contains the proceedings of a national symposium on the Course Experience Questionnaire that was held at The University of New South Wales in September 1998, jointly sponsored by DEEWR, GCCA and UNSW. The Symposium was attended by academics and managers involved in teaching, performance evaluation, planning, institutional research, student services and public relations. All Australian universities were represented, together with four New Zealand universities, DEEWR, AVCC and ACER The primary purpose was to review the CEQ and seek views on its continued relevance and future as a key higher education performance indicator for improving teaching performance and accountability. The report can be downloaded from http://www.dest.gov.au/highered/eippubs/99-2/ceq.pdf.

Enhancing and Customising the Analysis of the Course Experience Questionnaire, Terry Hand and Kerry Trembath, Evaluations and Investigations Programme, Department of Education, Training and Youth Affairs, October 1998

This is a report on a project that was funded by DEEWR and carried out at UNSW to develop ways in which CEQ data can be used to improve institutional performance and monitor the effects of changes that may have a bearing on the student experience.  The main outcome of the project is a CEQ Analysis Model (CEQAM) that enables the CEQ data to be examined in the context of a range of other related higher education performance data.  This is a Microsoft Excel software application that facilitates a range of enquiries such as comparing CEQ scores for a particular field of study across institutions, against a background of institutional profile data, and against a range of institutional specific performance indictors.  The report on the project can be downloaded from http://www.dest.gov.au/highered/eippubs/eip98-17/eip98-17.pdf and the files required to run the CEQAM model can be downloaded from http://www.ceq98.unsw.edu.au/ceqam.htm.
